Kel Simoon Hissa, FCh
Kel Simoon Azawakh came into existence in the spring of 1989 with the arrival of my first Azawakh, Reckendahl's Kiffah. My kennel name means, Kel, "from the tribe", and "Simoon" is a ferocious, hot, dry wind which blows across the Afro Asian deserts.
My goals are to:
Breed Azawakh you can live with (i.e., good temperament)
Breed Azawakh that can live (i.e., good health)
Breed Azawakh that are functional and beautiful.
To this end, I breed only to dogs with good temperament. I screen my breeding dogs for thyroid and autoimmune function, cardiac and eye problems. I also perform DNA testing.. I will willingly share and discuss these test results with potential Azawakh owners, feeling that it is vitally important that people should be able to make an informed decision about the dog with which they choose to share their life.

My dogs are raised as naturally and holistically as possible. I feed a natural human grade kibble, along with fresh food additives and utilize an abbreviated vaccination protocol. I feel that the dogs are healthier and happier when raised this way.

Starting after birth, the puppies are handled daily. Their whelping box is kept immaculately clean. I usually sleep on the couch for the first few weeks to make sure that puppies and mother are safe, and all is well. As their ears open, I start playing a CD with all kinds of sounds, trains, airplanes, vacuum cleaners, cars, fireworks, guns firing. I feel that it desensitizes them to noises. I have toys that make odd noises, play tunes, etc. Once outside, their play yard has a puppy swing, things to tug and pull, things that hang down that they can walk through, wobble boards, different surfaces to experience.
To start leash walking, I tie a short piece of baling string to their collars. The puppies teach themselves to follow a lead, when another puppy grabs their string and starts going. It's amazing how easy this makes walking on lead. Of course, they are always attended with their strings. I also work on sit and other basic obedience. They are also acclimated to chickens, ducks and my adult Azawakh and my LGD, Hilde. Friends come over frequently to handle them and I also take them over to my friend's houses for socialization. I take them to the park. It takes a village to raise a puppy!

I've been breeding Azawakh for more than 35 years. I generally, stay close to COO (Country of Origin) dogs when breeding. This is called by some Preservation breeding.
My original 4 Azawakh were all 1 generation from COO. So, I started with the idea of keeping to the "roots" of the breed as much as possible. My first Azawakh, Reckendah's Kiffah's sire was Mali, a direct COO male. My French import male, Kel Tarbanassen Etambo, a red brindled dog, was sired by C'Babasch, another direct import. His dam had one generation from COO imports.
The male that I consider my Foundation Sire was a German import, Dayyat n'shat-ehad. Both sire and dam were COO imports. His father Yaris was from Niger and his dam, Dazol In Chenan, was from Mali. The 4th import was another female from France. That was Kel Tarbanassan GuerouGuerou (Yssa). She was red brindled with white markings. She had a 3 generation pedigree from her dam, Cenertola de Nomades Bleus. Her sire was a littermate to Etambo.
At the present time, I have six Azawakh.
9 year-old, female, Kel Imajaghan Hima (Ella) whose sire has one generation from COO. (USA born)
7- year old Kel Simoon Runako n’ Sambala (Toby)
4-year-old male, Melech Ha'olam Rouchenn has a direct import dam and 3 generation sire. (imp. Hungary)
9 - month Kel Simoon Wanu , son of Rouchenn
2- year old male, Saber Shah Abayomi has a 3-generation pedigree (imp. Poland). Bayo will be available for stud in 2025 or 26.
2- year old female, Saber Shah Abeo has a 3-generation pedigree. (imp. Poland)
Abeo known as Abby is major pointed and group 4, as well as Reserve in the Azawakh specialty in orlando FL handled by Becki Pina . Becki will handle Abby in the 2024 Specialty in Doswell , VA. Abby will be bred in 2025 or 26 . Her litter will have the required 3 generation to show in AKC
For those who want to show AKC, this may not be possible given a particular litter. It takes a 3-generation pedigree to be able to show in AKC conformation. However, you can do any AKC performance and obedience competition without any problems. They can so be shown in conformation in UKC (United Kennel Club) shows. UKC also has all kinds of performance performance-based competitions.
Lure Coursing is available through AKC and ASFA (American Sighthound Field Assn.) Fast CAT and CAT are a racing type competition.

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Azawakh are not for everyone! If you have other sighthound experience, don't think that they are like other sighthound breeds. Azawakh are a bit feral and are excellent watchdogs and protectors. That means that if someone comes to your fence or front door, you'll KNOW about it. If someone enters your property, watch out! They require extensive socialization. As a breeder, it's my duty to say...perhaps you'd be better off with another breed, or you are an excellent person for an Azawakh.
Well, that certainly doesn't exclude you from being a good home for an Azawakh. When speaking to a prospective person, I explore with questions. What dog experience do you have? What is your living situation? What happens if you have to suddenly go out of town or plan a vacation? Additionally, I require that a questionnaire be filled out with references. And, yes, I do check the references! If it's possible, I do a home check or perhaps have someone else in the area to do it for me. I take placing my puppies very seriously. I want my puppies to have the best possible homes.
Absolutely! I'd be very happy to have you come visit. I have a guest room if you need or want to stay overnight. You can even sleep with an Azawakh! My door is always open. Within 5 miles, there are two other friends who have multiple Azawakh. So, if my six isn't enough, you can meet more. Also, I'm happy to put you in touch with other people who have dogs that I have bred.
I prefer that people pick up their puppies here, but if that isn't possible, I utilize a pet nanny to accompany the puppy on the airline. This adds a slight additional cost for the puppy, but she's wonderful and delivers the puppy to your hands at the airport. The puppy arrives happy and calm, ready to start a new life with you.
I DO NOT ship cargo EVER. Don't ask!
My puppies are usually pre-reserved prior to birth of a litter. Azawakh, though AKC recognized, are still a very rare breed. If you are serious about a puppy, you'll need to get on the wait list. Reach out to reserve your next best friend or to ask any questions.
